About PlayScored
PlayScored is an independent game review publication. We score games across six dimensions because a single number hides the things that actually decide whether you'll enjoy a game — frame rate, story, value-for-time. No sponsored scores, no affiliate bias, no rush reviews.
Why We Started PlayScored
Game reviews on big sites optimize for launch-day clicks. Scores arrive before patches land. Sub-ratings — when they exist — are buried at the bottom and rarely explained. A 9/10 on one site means something different from a 9/10 on another. Readers can't easily compare across reviewers, can't tell why a game scored what it scored, and can't trust that the reviewer played long enough to render judgment.
We built PlayScored to fix that. Every review breaks the game into six independent axes — Gameplay, Graphics, Story, Audio, Performance, Value — each scored 1–10 on its own merit. The final overall score is an editorial verdict, not a mathematical average. The methodology is public. The rubric is public. The hours played and platform tested are disclosed on every review.
What "Decision-Grade" Means
Most game reviews are written for entertainment. Ours are written for decisions. The reader is about to spend $30 to $70 and 10 to 100 hours of their life — they need to know not just whether the game is good, but whether it's good for them specifically.
So our six axes split the question into parts that map to what a buyer actually cares about: Does the moment-to-moment loop feel good? (Gameplay) Will it hold up on my hardware? (Performance) Is the writing worth your time? (Story) Will I get my money's worth? (Value) When you read a PlayScored review, the breakdown should give you enough information to decide in under two minutes — even if you skip the prose.
What We Won't Do
- No pre-release scores. If we haven't met our minimum playtime, the article carries no rating. Hands-off previews exist as a separate format and are clearly marked.
- No paid scores. Ever. Not for ad relationships, sponsorships, affiliate revenue, or favors. If a publisher rescinds future review access in retaliation for a score, we say so on the next review of theirs.
- No score inflation. A 7 is a good game worth your time. We don't pretend everything is an 8 or 9 to please anyone.
- No anonymous bylines. Every review is signed by the reviewer who actually played it.
How We Review
Every game on PlayScored goes through a consistent editorial process:
- Extended Play — We complete the main campaign or invest significant hours before writing. No rush reviews.
- Sub-Rating Assessment — Each game is scored across six independent dimensions: Gameplay, Graphics, Story, Audio, Performance, and Value.
- Editorial Review — Final score is an editorial verdict, not a mathematical average of sub-ratings.
- Publication — Every review includes a transparent scoring breakdown, hours played, and platform tested.
For full methodology — scoring rubric, hours-played minimums, disclosure policy — see How We Review. For independence commitments and corrections policy, see our Editorial Policy.
Our Values
Independence
No sponsored scores. No affiliate bias. Every rating is earned through genuine gameplay experience.
Transparency
We disclose when review copies are provided by publishers. Our scoring criteria are public and consistent.
Thoroughness
We don't rush reviews for clicks. Every game gets the time and attention it deserves before we publish.
Transparency Commitments
- Funding. PlayScored is reader-supported and runs Google AdSense display ads. Ads never influence editorial. We do not run sponsored content, advertorials, or paid product placements.
- Review copies. When a publisher provides a review code, we disclose it in the review footer. Receiving a code doesn't guarantee a positive review, and we have published critical reviews of games we received from publishers.
- Corrections. Factual errors are corrected with a dated note at the top of the affected review. We don't quietly edit history.
- AI usage. Reviews are written by human reviewers. AI tools may assist with research, headline brainstorming, or proofreading, but the playthrough, judgment, and final prose are human work.
- Affiliate links. If we add affiliate links in the future, every linked product will be one we already recommended on editorial merit, and the affiliate disclosure will be visible at the bottom of the review.
